The Character Arc Roadmap I originally posted here around 2021 laid the foundation for a structured approach to character development in an extremely streamlined and straight forward fashion.
Recognizing it was high time to remedy some gaps in that approach, I decided to take what I’ve used internally for years and rework it into something more robust and coherent for other writers and editors.
The result is S.C.A.R. – the Source Character Arc Roadmap system.

Before diving in, a few principles worth anchoring to:
Your character is not the impression they make when the reader first meets them. Your character is the COMPLETE IMPRESSION they make over the entire story.
Empathy is not broken when we see a flawed character.
The impact of a character arc is never felt in a single moment, it’s a cumulative experience across the breadth of the story. The more you stress the flawed starting point early on, the more room there is for development, and the more engaging and effective the arc resolves.
These foundational principles haven’t changed at all. What’s changed is the system beneath them. SCAR expands on the architecture to actually build what these principles describe.
